Lightscape - Night Birds

Night Birds

Created by Michael Young
Plant Family Collection

A flock of oversize birds with neon-lit feathers hovers around Lightscape visitors at the south end of the Plant Family Collection, an abstract nod to the Garden’s 2022 exhibition and program series For the Birds.

Night Birds is the creation of Michael Young, a Chicago artist specializing in site-specific, self-fabricated public sculpture and light-based work who aims to “freeze the fleeting” and evoke a sense of emotional connection. “All environments are interconnected—from a sapling bending in the wind to leaves intertwined to a ‘hello’ exchanged between neighbors,” says Young.
