Join longtime urban farmer Molly Culver for a deep dive into the complex and inspiring world of minerals and living organisms at work beneath our feet. Healthy soil is the source of essential nutrients, root anchorage, oxygen, and water for the plants we eat, use medicinally, and enjoy as flowers. We’ll cover the basic components of soil (living and inert) and discuss how we can support soil's natural processes to grow healthy food, flowers, and herbs. Some basic concepts covered in this introductory class are: soil’s physical chemical properties; how and when to cultivate soil to maintain its health and to produce as much food, herbs, or flowers as possible; a compost micro lesson; soil testing 101; risks for toxicity in urban soils and regeneration of soil; and resources for learning more about soil. If you’re new to gardening or would love to understand more how soil health may be affecting your plant’s health, this short introductory course is for you!
