Compost is an amazing soil builder and plant fertilizer! Roughly 20 percent of NYC’s waste stream is organic waste, in the form of food scraps. This course empowers New Yorkers to take matters into their own hands by setting up bins for their homes, buildings, blocks, or community gardens. We’ll review the hows and whys of composting—including how to create the proper conditions, and what tools and routines you’ll need to successfully make this incredible soil conditioner. We’ll discuss dos and don't for basic bin maintenance and choosing the right system for your site and goals. And we’ll do some virtual hands-on composting work: your own site inventory, bin setup, and batch build, and a worm-bin setup for folks who can only compost in their apartments.
