Bromeliads and other vibrant plants cascade from the Conservatory skylight in a display of kokedama, the centerpiece of BBG’s annual holiday exhibit in the Steinhardt Conservatory. Designed and constructed by Margarita Poulson, Brooklyn Botanic Garden's curator of Interior Displays & Washington Avenue Gardens, the installation highlights this popular variant of indoor bonsai in which the plant is encased in a sphere of moss-covered soil and either suspended in the air or displayed in a shallow container.
