    The KaNu Dance Theater company performs a fusion of traditional and contemporary Haitian dance, choreographed by Jessica St. Vil. The choreography explores how we can collectively draw on our strengths to address inequity and injustice.

    NYC Stands with Haiti

    On August 14, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti. If you would like to help, these relief organizations are recommended by the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City in partnership with The City of New York.

    Journey to the nanm (“soul” in Haitian Creole) of Afro-Haitian dance and become acquainted with the different Iwa (gods) in the vodou religion through their dances, songs, rhythms, and rituals. Featuring live accompaniment, this performance will explore the undulating movements of Yanvalu, the powerful precision of Nago, and the grace and beauty of the Kongo dance—all traditional Haitian dance forms with roots in West Africa and the South American Amazon.

    Korn, whose repertoire merges early jazz and other American folk music with Yiddish songs and poetry, is known for her improvisatory approaches and existential skat vocalizations. She is joined by an ensemble of strings and horns and then some.

    Stefan Zeniuk leads the Green Mambo through the joyous music of ’50s-era Latin mambos, rockambos, and danzóns. Appealing to both dancing and relaxing audiences, this band filters their sound of slinky grooves and joyful humor through vintage organ sounds with percussion and horns.
