This year, BBG’s Greenest Block in Brooklyn signs have undergone a bit of greening themselves. Instead of using laminated or plastic signs, we printed them on the backs of vinyl banners from last year’s events. Garden staff and volunteers helped with this repurposing project by measuring and cutting the banners. We sent the material to Brooklyn silkscreen studio Kayrock for printing on the reverse side. Behold the results on a tree or fence near you! Or better yet, enter by June 1 and get a custom, repurposed sign for your own block.
This is just one of many recent efforts to green BBG’s printing process. As of this year, we now produce all brochures, maps, letterhead, and business cards on 100 percent postconsumer recycled paper. Our internal photocopy paper is also 100 percent recycled, and we’ve reduced total paper use by sending more email and fewer postcards. Plus, we use local printers for our outsourced printing work to decrease our carbon footprint. Stay tuned for more improvements in the future.
