P06. Clematis recta 'Purpurea'
Ground clematis (cultivar)
Hardiness: USDA Zones 3–9
Full sun
Average soil
2–4 feet tall
As the common name suggests, this clematis is more a ground hugger than a climbing vine. It produces a mound of hollow stems that grow upright at first but then flop over to give the plant a more informal look. Its low habit and lovely deep purple emergent foliage make it attractive for borders. Fading to mid-green with maturity, the foliage can be pruned to encourage purple coloring. For three weeks in summer, the plant is adorned with masses of small, lightly fragrant, starry white flowers, which develop into showy silver seed heads. Grow ground clematis in humus-rich, well-drained soil and full sun.
