H03. Kalanchoe thyrsiflora
Flapjacks
Hardiness: USDA Zones 9–11
Full sun to partial shade
Dry to average soil
Grow in pot
1–1½ feet tall
A very attractive perennial succulent from South Africa, Kalanchoe thyrsiflora is virtually maintenance free. As hinted by the common name, it produces a dense "stack" of fleshy, pancakelike leaves. The red-margined pale green leaves have a thick "frosting" of white wax and are sometimes elegantly curled. In spring, the plant bears panicles of fragrant urn-shaped yellow flowers. Grow it in humus-rich, well-drained soil in bright, unfiltered light at temperatures above 54°F.
