The Iris and Peony Collection

This small but strikingly colorful garden, just south of the Rock Garden, was originally donated by the Bay Ridge Garden Club in 1951 and used for displaying irises—mostly bearded varieties. Then, in the early 1980s, during the construction of the Steinhardt Conservatory, it also became a temporary holding space for some of BBG's perennial collection, particularly its herbaceous peonies. These plants did so well in their new home that they were made permanent residents, and the garden has been called the Peony and Iris Collection ever since. To experience the full glory of these dramatic and fragrant flowers, visit in late May and early June.
