Home Composting Exhibit
Brooklyn Botanic Garden, in cooperation with the NYC Department of Sanitation Bureau of Waste Prevention, Reuse and Recycling, designed this demonstration site in 1993 to introduce Brooklyn residents to composting at home and in community gardens. In 2005, it was renovated to include interpretative signs in both English and Spanish.
In this area, various composting techniques and tools for home gardeners are on display, from commercial bins, such as those made from recycled plastic like the Biostack, Earth Machine, and Garden Gourmet, to homemade variations, such as the Circular Wire Mesh Bin, Compost Bench, and Wooden Two-Bin System. You might even consider the Trash Can Composter, which is available commercially, but also an example of a great way to turn a regular trash can into a composter. Stop by to see leaves and other organic materials in the process of decomposition, to learn a little about what a compost system needs, and to determine which bin might work best for you.
