City Kids Classes & Events
City Kids Classes & Events carries forward a tradition begun at Brooklyn Botanic Garden in 1914 with the founding of our Children's Garden—the first children's gardening program ever established at a botanic garden. From the beginning, BBG's goal has been to engage city children and teens in the pleasures—and unparalleled educational opportunities—afforded by gardening and the exploration of nature. With this new resource, Brooklyn Botanic Garden is extending children's gardening opportunities out into the neighborhoods of New York and other cities.
City Kids Classes & Events is written for adult leaders working with young people from 5 to 18 years old. While the activities were developed or tested in New York City, they are equally appropriate for use in other urban settings as well. Generally, the activities are designed for small-space gardening, and many of the materials called for can be easily found or recycled.
City Kids Classes & Events aims to expose young people to the special environmental issues that affect urban dwellers and urban gardeners. It points out the ways that they, as young city gardeners, can most responsibly care for and improve their environment—through appropriate plant-care techniques, pollution reduction, composting and other forms of recycling, water conservation, and gardening that creates wildlife habitat.
