No need to travel far or seek out so-called "exotic" cultures; there's a long and rich tradition of gathering wild plants for food right here in Brooklyn! Leda will guide the class through the history of wild food gathering in the eastern U.S. and will show you edible wild plants found right here in Prospect Park! From fresh dandelion greens to savory wild garlic to juicy blackberries, there's plenty to eat right within arm's reach! Please wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather.

Tai Chi Chuan

Tai chi chuan ("supreme ultimate force") is a Chinese martial art emphasizing how one's yin and yang can be brought to balance. Regular practice of tai chi chuan improves blood circulation, relaxes your mind and body, increases your chi (internal energy), and gives you a good night's sleep.

The class is held outside on BBG grounds (except Tai Chi Chuan I), weather permitting. Wear comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement.

Tai Chi Chuan I (Indoors)

This class includes step-by-step instruction in the principles of this ancient Chinese exercise. No previous experience is necessary.

Hatha Yoga

Hatha yoga is the practice of physical postures and movements to increase physical strength and flexibility and restore balance between body, mind, and spirit. The practice has developed over thousands of years, and many of the postures mimic plants, trees, flowers, animals, and insects. In the beautiful natural setting of BBG, we will work through yoga poses, breathing exercises, and meditation. Please bring a towel or yoga mat and wear comfortable clothing that allows free movement. No previous experience necessary. Classes held rain (indoors) or shine (outdoors).

A Taste of Chinatown Walking Tour

You may think you know Chinese food; after all, New Yorkers eat more of it than any other ethnic cuisine. But Westerners strolling through Chinatown may be overwhelmed by the bewildering array of fruits, vegetables, and roots found in the markets there. Join BBG instructor Nancy Tim as she helps you navigate this cornucopia. Learn about the culinary and cultural significance of various plant foods and spices in different Chinese traditions. The tour will end with a delicious lunch, of course, so please bring money for your meal. Remember to wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather.

Note: The tour will begin at the northwest corner of Mott Street and Canal Street.

Afternoon Tea

Experience the flavors and aromas of the world's second most popular beverage: tea. In a journey through many time periods and cultures, this course examines the curative and preventative powers of tea. Explore the subtleties of Chinese green teas, the nuances of oolong, and the earthiness of aged pu-erh, with a variety of tastings. Each student will receive a copy of the instructor's book, The Old CuriosiTEA Shop.
