About the Education Department
Education is a primary mission at Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Since its founding in 1910, BBG has been an internationally recognized leader and innovator in environmental education programs. Our educational programs enable young people and adults alike to acquire a broader sense of the natural world and to understand that we all play a role in preserving and improving the quality of our environment.
Today, BBG serves more than 150,000 children annually through a wide range of on-site, in-school, and community-based initiatives. Beginning with our Children's Garden Program—one of the first children's gardens in the country—our award-winning programming now includes an array of classes, workshops, internships, teacher training, and guided tours of the Garden. BBG, in conjunction with Prospect Park Alliance and the New York City Department of Education, is a partner with the Brooklyn Academy of Science and the Environment (BASE), Brooklyn's first environmentally focused public high school.
Our educational programs also involve more than 37,000 adults and children in neighborhood conservation efforts by partnering with schools, libraries, block associations, and other community organizations to create and sustain gardens as well as an awareness of the importance of preserving green spaces in their communities. BBG's on-site adult-education programs continue to provide the community with more than 175 different courses and tours each year.
