Interpretation

This year marked the end of a three-year project to evaluate and update the Garden's interpretive practices, which received leadership support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services Museums for America program. During the final phase of this project, BBG engaged a well-respected interpretive design consultant, THINC, to assist in designing new interpretive signs for the Tropical Pavilion of the Steinhardt Conservatory, which served as the site for a prototype project using the ideas and framework suggested in the Garden's newly-adopted Interpretive Master Plan. The evaluation consultants, Giusti and Condon, assessed the signage throughout its development. During the year, BBG continued to work with Mary Kay Cunningham, a noted interpretive trainer, to develop and deliver workshops in interpretive techniques tailored to the needs of BBG's Garden Guide volunteers. To ensure that interpretation became embedded in BBG's institutional culture, Ms. Cunningham concluded her assignment by training 12 staff "interpretive liaisons" from across the institution who work directly with the public.
